Educational High School Video Series “5 Questions with…”| Exploring the World of Capital Markets

This short educational video series offer high school students an opportunity to explore the world of Canadian capital markets.

Since 1996 WCM has been delivering high school programming to students across Canada with great success. In order to expand our reach into more high schools nationally and to support online learning in a virtual world, we have designed our first high school digital content, titled: “5 Questions With…”, an educational short video series, showcasing the career journeys of industry professionals from high school to the jobs they hold today in capital markets.

Recorded over video chat, these 5-minute videos highlight professional women working in various roles across the industry, giving students a glimpse into the variety of exciting and rewarding careers that exist within finance.

Unstoppable and Rising: The State of Indigenous Women in the Canadian Finance Sector

In 2018, the Canadian Human Rights Commission’s horizontal audit exposed a challenging reality about Indigenous employment in Canada’s banking and financial sector. While 62.9% of employers reported incorporating employment equity goals in their succession planning, only 25.7% identified Indigenous men for key positions, and only 14.3% did the same for Indigenous women. These figures underscore the systemic barriers faced by talent from Indigenous communities, particularly women. However, recognizing the problem is the first step toward creating meaningful change.

In a recent Globe and Mail article, the concept of a glass cliff was shared relating to the departure of a woman CEO from one of the finance industry’s top banks. Glass cliff represents women being positioned in leadership roles when organizations are in turmoil (i.e., crisis appointments and subsequently happily letting these women take the fall during difficult times.
