Position description
The Opportunity

The Analyst plays an integral role in evaluating direct private equity investments and select fund commitments to strategic partners. They have a key role in sub-sector investment research and investment strategy development and work within deal teams to evaluate investment opportunities and present recommendations to the investment committee. This work includes rigorous analysis, sophisticated financial modeling, and collaboration with outside professionals such as strategic partners, investment bankers, consultants, and lawyers to prepare investment committee materials, conduct due diligence and support deal execution. Following an investment, the Analyst remains involved with portfolio companies by monitoring performance and supporting management or strategic partners on value-creation initiatives, such as follow-on M&A, financings and strategic programs.


Who you will work with

BCI’s Private Equity program oversees a ~C$30 billion global portfolio, with an emphasis on direct investments.

We seek to invest ~US$100-500+ million for ~20-100% equity ownership in market-leading companies with sustainable competitive advantages and multiple value creation opportunities. BCI Private Equity invests directly and often alongside strategic partners with deep sector expertise across our targeted sectors including Business Services, Consumer, Financial Services, Healthcare, Industrials and TMT. We secure meaningful governance/board positions which underpin our active role in value creation from deal origination through exit.

 

What you will do

Investment Analysis and Execution

  • Supports the preliminary analysis of investment opportunities, reviews public information, meets with management teams and develops valuation frameworks
  • Reviews key credit terms and financial projections
  • Develops investment thesis and identifies merits, risks, and mitigating factors
  • Coordinates and completes most due diligence sections with guidance
  • Takes a structured approach with appropriate level of analysis across various diligence workstreams
  • Synthesizes findings, key analysis and supporting documents in an organized manner
  • Writes effective screeners, deal alerts and investment memorandums, and assists in coordinating the internal review/approval process
  • Interacts effectively with third-party advisors as well as with BCI internal groups (e.g., legal/tax/risk)
  • Supports deal team with commercial, financial, tax, legal, governance, HR, and ESG diligence

 

Portfolio Monitoring and Oversight

  • Monitors assigned investments identifying relevant opportunities and risks including tracking / evaluating performance metrics, ongoing review against original investment thesis, strategic fit, significant changes impacting the company, valuation issues and industry developments
  • Supports the development of tracking tools and processes to ensure sustained long-term returns
  • Systematically develops objective and rigorous views on the long-term health and potential of companies within the portfolio

 

Projects/Ongoing Knowledge

  • Keeps up to date on industry and private equity trends
  • Works on specific projects to enhance team capabilities
  • Develops strategic relationships with co-sponsor partners, consultants/advisors, limited partners, internal resources, and other relevant stakeholders

 

Where you will work

Work from our downtown Victoria office. We are an in-person collaborative organization with the flexibility to work remotely 1-day a week.

Salary range

BCI offers a competitive total rewards package which includes a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan and paid time off.

The annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role is CAD $115,000 -$132,5000.

The base salary offered to the successful candidate will consider a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill set, level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered and consideration to internal equity.

We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we operate and with consideration to internal equity and job structure. We aim for actual pay to be around the median of the market for target or expected levels of performance, and around the upper quartile of the market for excellent performance.

Required skills / Experience

What you bring

  • An undergraduate degree, distinguished by academic achievement
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in areas such as private equity, investment banking, strategy consulting and corporate development or equivalent experience
  • Strong skills in financial modeling, analysis, valuation, and research
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • High degree of attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively manage projects under pressure and within tight deadlines
  • Solid business acumen and judgement
  • Ability to function both independently and as part of a high-performance team
  • Familiarity with financial analytical tools such as Capital IQ
  • Preparedness for occasional travel
  • Valid work authorization in Canada
