Position description

The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (the “BC SPCA” or “Society”) is a dynamic organization with a province-wide presence, including 31 animal centres, 2 animal hospitals, 2 spay/neuter clinics, a wildlife rehabilitation centre, and a provincial office in Vancouver.

The Finance & Audit Committee (the “Committee”) is a standing committee of the BC SPCA Board of Directors (the “Board”). The Committee assists the Board in fulfilling its oversight function over finance, accounting, audit, information technology, investments, and organizational risk management.

The Committee meets virtually approximately five times per annum for approximately 90 minutes per meeting. Committee members are expected to review materials ahead of each meeting.

Required skills / Experience

The Board is seeking expressions of interest from individuals interested in volunteering to serve on the Committee to help provide strategic advice and governance oversight, with relevant skills or experience in one or more of the following areas:

Governance & Committee Experience
• Experience on a Board of Directors and/or Finance and Audit Committee of a medium- to large-sized Canadian charity is required. Chartered Professional Accountant preferred. Demonstrated governance experience, including fiduciary oversight, accountability, and strategic decision-making.

Risk, Technology & Artificial Intelligence (“AI”)
• Experience governing technology risk and roadmaps, including a strong understanding of cybersecurity, AI, data privacy and digital transformation.
• Experience with enterprise risk management, including financial, operational, and reputational risk.

Financial & Investment Expertise
• Experience with institutional investment governance.
• Strong understanding of financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, and financial risk management.
• Familiarity with audit processes, internal controls, and regulatory and compliance requirements for Canadian charities.

Ideal candidates may have held senior leadership roles such as Chief Financial Officer, Vice-President of Finance, Chief Information Officer, Chief Technology Officer, Institutional Investment Manager, or a senior executive with responsibility for cybersecurity, data governance or AI-related risk and oversight.
