We are pleased to offer a paid four‑month summer student opportunity combined with a tuition scholarship for eligible University of Winnipeg students pursuing studies in Business or Economics.

Position description

Scholarship Opportunity

  • Student with 60-87 Credit Hours:
    • Eligible students may recieve:
      • $2,500 Tuition Scholarship
      • $1,000 towards Educational Expense
      • Opportunity for one additional year of renewal, subject to meeting renewal criteria.
  • Students with 90+ Credit Hours and expected to graduate in Spring the following calendar year
    • Eligible students may recieve:
      • Full Tuition Scholarship (up to $5,000)
      • $1,000 towards Educational Expense

Funding received to be based on course registration and arranged with the University of Winnipeg Awards Office and The Faculty of Business and Economics.

 

Scholarship Renewal Criteria

Scholarship renewals (up to a maximum of $5,000) are subject to the recipient meeting the following criteria:

  • Completion of 90 credit hours toward their degree and plans to graduate at the conclusion of the academic session in which the scholarship is tenable
  • Continues full-time student enrollment
  • Maintenance of a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Sucessful completion of a a four-month work placement with Canada Life that has been assessed as satisfactory by the Selection Committee

Students who do not maintain their full-time student status and/or whose GPA falls below 3.0 will have their scholarship placed under review for decision by the Dean in consultation with Canada Life.

 

Work Term Experience

  • Students will be required to complete a paid summer work placement at Canada Life in the summer preceding their scholarship award
  • Roles and responsibilities are determined after the applicant selection process, shared at the start of the term by the departments into which students are assigned to work
  • A hybrid model work set-up is expected, subject to change with the area of placement and role responsibilities. Work-from-home set-ups require students to work at full capabilities, or full-time in-office arrangements will be required.
  • Students are committed to a satisfactory and demonstrated performance level throughout the term, as monitored by their leadership and work team

 

Selection Criteria

  • Academic Assessment (weighting – 60%)
    • Minimum overall GPA above 3.0
    • All applications submit a current transcript (please attach on your profile in the Transcripts section – Online screenshots permitted).
  • Written Composition (weighting – 20%) 
    • Applicants must submit a 2-3 page essay addressing:
      • Their interest in Canada Life, and
      • Their interest in the financial services and/or insurance industry
  • Personal Interview (weighting – 20%)  
    • Interviews conducted by the Canada Life Selection Panel

Final selection is based on the highest combined evaluation across all components

Required skills / Experience

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a currently enrolled and full-time student at the University of Winnipeg
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Must have completed at least 60 credit hours from the University of Winnipeg by end of Winter term in current calendar year
  • Must have a declared major in either Business and Administration, Economics or Economics and Finance
  • Be committed to participating in a paid four-month work summer work placement with Canada Life
