Position description

Foyston, Gordon & Payne is looking for an outstanding candidate who wants to be an integral member of an experienced Canadian equity investment team at a leading institutional asset manager. Our long-tenured team is looking for a unique individual who is innately curious, a believer in value investing, and has demonstrated research experience on the buy-side, sell-side or perhaps in a corporate investing team.

We are seeking an individual, regardless of gender, race or background, who is a perpetual learner, analytically minded, and capable of delivering actionable research in a timely manner.

The ideal candidate is an active communicator who is not afraid to pitch and debate ideas with an investment team. You will generally work independently, but participate in a team environment, and must be a ‘self starter’ who is pro-active.

We believe that investment performance matters, being a contributing team member matters and individual accountability also matters. We are looking for candidates that share these values.

What you will do:

• Work closely with the Canadian equity team to research companies and influence investment decisions for Canadian equity portfolios
• Provide research and analysis of Canadian equities
• Consolidate and analyze information from company financial statements, industry conferences and company presentations, analysts, and company management teams
• Build and maintain financial models
• Present stock recommendations to the Portfolio Managers

Required skills / Experience

• 3 to 7 years of experience in an equity analyst role, ideally on the sell-side, buy-side but perhaps in another unique investing role
• Collaborate in a team-oriented approach, working with others
• Demonstrate an ability to understand financial statements, including nuances of accounting
• Be curious, and show strong analytical skills
• Demonstrate an ability to succinctly present a written investment thesis
• Confidence and comfort in expressing opinions to the investment team
• Comfortable with both a collaborative and debate-driven approach to communication
• A mindset of humility and being able to learn from past mistakes
• Be willing to work in our Toronto office (most days of the week)
