As an Investment Banking Analyst or Associate on the Energy Investment Banking team at National Bank Financial Inc. (“NBF”), you will participate in a wide variety of transactions headed by senior members of the investment banking team. You will gain exposure to the firm’s business and deepen your knowledge of the investment banking industry.

Your Job

Preparing presentation materials to support our clients’ capital decision making
Providing support in the execution of M&A transactions and equity and fixed income issuances
Building complex financial models and performing valuation analysis
Conducting a variety of industry and company research and analysis
Performing various tasks supporting senior team members in their deal execution and client coverage efforts

NBF is a full-service, fully integrated investment dealer with a strong national presence and international capabilities. As an established player in the North American markets, NBF is committed to adding high calibre resources to its Investment Banking group. This group currently consists of over 170 professionals located in offices in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, and New York. The Investment Banking Group at NBF has demonstrated considerable momentum over the last few years, experiencing strong growth in deal flow.

NBF’s Energy Investment Banking team is looking to hire one Investment Banking Analyst or Associate to work out of its Calgary office. The successful candidate will benefit from on-the-job training and mentorship, supplemented by occasional third-party training in financial modelling and various tools used in our day-to-day work.

Although the emphasis is placed on analysis, financial modelling and written presentations, candidates must also demonstrate the ability to interact effectively with clients, colleagues, and other advisors.

Required skills / Experience

Basic Requirements

Undergraduate or graduate degree in finance, accounting, economics or engineering is preferred along with a track record of outstanding academic performance
Knowledge of fundamental financial principles and capital markets
Analyst role requires 1 to 3 years of experience in investment banking, equity research, or capital markets, whereas Associate role requires at least 4 years of experience in these areas.
For the Analyst role, experience in energy infrastructure, pipelines, and midstream and upstream sectors is preferred. For the Associate role, this experience is required.
Demonstrated financial modelling skillset; additional background and knowledge of the integration of debt/capital structure principles in analysis is also an asset
Exceptional proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint, and Word
Experience with Bloomberg and Capital IQ would be considered an asset
Demonstrated problem-solving mindset, collaborative approach and great team spirit
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusted relationships
Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written)
