Position description
THE OPPORTUNITY

BCI’s tax team is looking for a Manager to join its Deal Advisory group. Reporting to a Director, Tax, the role provides support on tax-related issues for investments in private equity, infrastructure and renewable resources, private credit and public markets. This position works closely with BCI’s internal deal teams, legal department, other BCI departments, other institutional investors and external tax advisors on strategic and complex transactions and issues. Team members also work on other projects such as internal reorganizations, management of tax issues for existing assets and engaging with foreign revenue authorities and governments on key issues related to BCI and its clients. BCI Tax’s focus is to ensure BCI’s clients can access preferred tax rates on investments across the globe in a manner consistent with overall goals such as investment governance and operational efficiency. Key aspects of the role include:

  • Providing tax support to deal teams for the entire investment life cycle (diligence, structuring, modeling, and post-close asset management) for investments across several asset classes
  • Interpreting different international tax and business issues with the assistance of external advisors, internalizing advice and guiding deal teams on positions that align with BCI’s tax risk policy
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders to address structuring and operational requirements
  • Managing relationships with external advisors in different markets to assist with transactions
  • Developing relationships with tax professionals at external fund managers, pension and sovereign wealth funds, revenue authorities and advisors
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

The Finance department is part of BCI Operations and is responsible for investment and corporate accounting, valuations, as well as financial statements and financial reporting to our clients. The team also leads BCI’s budgeting process, tax structuring and tax compliance, finance client engagement, finance operations, procurement, and investment performance and analytics. Working with our internal business partners, auditors and external advisors, the Finance department strives to be a trusted advisor to our internal and external clients by providing timely, accurate, and relevant financial information and analysis.

SALARY RANGE

BCI offers a competitive total rewards package which includes a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan and paid time off.

The annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role is CAD $115,000 to $140,000.

The base salary offered to the successful candidate will consider a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill set, level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered and consideration to internal equity.

We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we compete for talent and with consideration to internal equity and job structure. We aim for actual pay to be around the median of the market for target or expected levels of performance, and around the upper quartile of the market for excellent performance.

Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors, including, but not limited to, experience and expertise.

Required skills / Experience
WHAT YOU BRING
  • 6 years experience in taxation with a law firm, accounting firm and/or in industry or other relevant experience
  • A professional accounting or law designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA, JD, LL.B. or international equivalent)
  • A strategic thinker and team player who is pro-active and motivated to identify commercial solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively engage staff and external advisors to research and solve complex and challenging problems
  • The capability to manage multiple and competing priorities and to meet deadlines
  • Verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with the BCI tax team, the internal deal and operations teams and with external advisors
Preferred
  • Completion of the CICA In-depth Tax course, a Masters in Tax or other similar training
  • Experience with domestic and international private equity, infrastructure, private credit and/or real estate transactions
  • Experience with tax-exempt pension plans and/or tax-exempt government investors
  • Experience with relevant US tax law and/or tax law in other jurisdictions outside Canada
  • Applicants less experienced in these areas but with an interest in them and willingness to do additional training will be considered
