About the role

Join our dynamic team as Principal, External Strategies, where you will play a critical role in supporting the building and management of the externally managed public market program. Within Total Portfolio Management, the Completion Portfolio Strategies team is responsible for developing and managing strategies that support continued evolution of the public completion portfolio. The team invests in a wide variety of strategies with global top tier asset management partners, including hedge funds, credit managers, equity managers and venture capital funds. The portfolio will be a concentrated set of strategic relationships designed to facilitate knowledge transfer and strategic benefits for the Total Fund in addition to their underlying investment mandates. The individual is required to work collaboratively with multiple groups within the Investments Division as well as functional partners across the broader OPTrust organization.

What you’ll do

  • Lead investment due diligence processes and demonstrate strong transaction execution capabilities across various external asset management strategies, including but not limited to fixed income, macro, quantitative, smart beta, equities, hedge funds, credit strategies, and innovation themes.
  • Lead deal negotiations: ability to identify key points of contention during negotiations and demonstrate ability to evaluate trade-off/give-take scenarios.
  • Identify, evaluate and derive strategic value from partners; recognize internal teams that can benefit from interactions with our partners and facilitate the relationship building process; generate and implement ideas on how we can add strategic value to our partners.
  • Actively manage and monitor portfolio exposures and market movements to determine impact on fund performance.
  • Support and contribute to Total Fund projects and initiatives, the Investment Planning process, and collaborate with other investment groups and functions to enhance our investment framework over time.
  • Escalate any concerns identified to Managing Director as needed.
Required skills / Experience

What you bring

  • A degree (BA/MA/MBA) is required.
  • CFA is an asset.
  • Experience in investment due diligence (preference for background in hedge funds, equity, and credit strategies).
  • Previous work experience (minimum 5 years) with external manager selection.
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively with internal and external partners and build strong relationships
  • Negotiating skills, with the ability to quickly identify stakeholder interests and structure creative solutions to reconcile competing objectives.
  • A passion for investing with a desire to follow investment markets and their dynamics.
  • Analytic capabilities, able to quickly evaluate and understand fund managers and their investments.
  • An inquisitive nature, with a curiosity in evaluating new ideas to help drive portfolio innovation over time.
  • The ability to communicate complex information in a simple, relevant, effective, unbiased and direct manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and contribute to a high-performing team.
